Just divorced? How to know when it’s time to move on

Divorce can be painful, not only for you but for family, friends and, most importantly, children, but it happens, and your life must go on afterwards. When is the best time to move on?

It sounds melancholy but divorce can feel like a bereavement. You mourn them for a period of time and, with the help of people around you, you move on. However, you need to be prepared that you may never truly "get over" an ex.

You are the only person who can know when it's time to move on, and how you are feeling; there are certain ways to get over someone but the most important one is to take your time and not rush into anything. First, you need to gain control of yourself and your life.

Other ways involve finding a good friend to talk to. Someone who is a good listener is a great strength and can help you through your darkest hours. If you are too embarrassed to talk it through with anyone then start a journal; writing down your feelings is a great way of mastering them.

Try putting more energy into your professional and personal life; divorce can hit your career hard.

Try becoming more social; spend more time chatting with work colleagues or friends. It's fun in its own right, but it's also practice - the more you're used to social contact, the easier those first dates will be.

There is no right or wrong time to move on; it could be a month or even five years after. But once you start enjoying your own company then you know you can move on without animosity or regret.
